THE LESSONS FOR TODAY

October 29, 2010 by tonja 6 Comments
I am a stickler for good spelling.  I know I slip up at times, but I try to always use spellcheck on everything.   It bothers me no end that well educated folks do not know the difference between   ‘there, their, and they’re.’  Nor do they know that ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ are not the same word!  I think most times when I get to feeling like I know so much, the good Lord will bring me down a peg or two.  Which is exactly what He did when I read this information the other day:

Mantle– (n.)a layer, a veil. A responsibility, veneer, or façade.

Mantel – (n.)a chimney piece or decorative fireplace screen.

I had no idea.  Really.  How have I lived all these years and not known this.  I knew there were two definitions, but I thought they were spelled the same…m.a.n.t.l.e.  I just never even thought about it being 2 different spellings!  So, there you go!  I’m not nearly as smart as I thought I was.  And, for those of you who use ‘your’ in the place of ‘you’re’…I’m sorry for thinking bad of you.  But, really, you should know that…it’s used all the time!

A few pictures of the Fall Festival at our church this week.

Here’s my friend, Tyler, with Candy Corn on his face.  He had a cross on the other side.

Do you recognize this little ‘bumbly bee’ ?  That’s right…it’s Lucy Jane!

And, now a few facts you may enjoy knowing about Halloween candy.

HALLOWEEN CANDY:
Average spent in each household on candy for trick or treating……$40.00
Amount spent nationwide on Halloween candy……………..$2.5 billion
Candy most given out…..Mini Snickers.
Candy trick or treaters most wish to receive……Mini Snickers, Single Reeses cup, Mini M&M’s;
Each year, 20 million pounds of candy corn are produced.
In the business of candy sales, Christmas sales are #1, Halloween sales are #2.

THIS GOES UNDER  THE COLUMN…I COULDN’T CARE LESS:
The healthiest candies (just in case some of the candy happens to fall out of their bag and they won’t eat it and you don’t like to let perfectly good candy go to waste) are:

1.  P-Nut M&M’s……………2.  3 Musketeers Bar………………3.  Junior Mints or Peppermint Patty

So, in case you care…this little chart will show you just how much damage you are doing…

DWTS

October 28, 2010 by tonja 4 Comments

I enjoy watching Dancing with the Stars.  It is fun to see the contestants with no dance training progress each week.  They have a lot of nerve to even get up there and try.
However, it sort of rubs me the wrong way how much sexual innuendo there is on DWTS.   At times it is carried to the extreme.  And, also, all the ‘buzz’ after the shows is who got voted off and what they did wrong and who should have gone.   And, not just on DWTS, but they talk about it on lots of other shows as well.    It’s all just a part of the game, but you would think it was news that the world was dying to hear!    Like it really matters in the grand scheme of things…it’s a game, people!
In each episode there is footage of the couples as they are learning the dances and how they relate to one another.  Very fun to watch.  And, during this ‘learning session’ is where I heard the most profound thing I have ever heard on this program. [ Not that this is the kind of show you would expect to hear anything profound. ]  It was sort of glossed over, so you may have missed it.

Kurt Warner and his partner  were learning their dance.  She was guiding him where to put his hands on her, and  trying to get him to hold her closer and be more intimate with her.  This was part of the way the dance is designed, but Kurt was very uncomfortable.  She finally stopped and asked him why he was not doing as she was instructing and he said, “I am a Christian.  I don’t want to do anything that would offend my wife. I don’t feel comfortable with this.   I need to get her in here to see this and get her approval.”  Can you imagine?  In front of all the millions of people who are watching this show…his thoughts are what is pleasing to God and acceptable to his wife. It’s not about being macho and sexy and some really suave dancer.  He was a big deal football player…retired now.  And, is the father of 7.  He and his wife formed an organization called First Things First…that is “Dedicated to impacting lives by promoting Christian values, sharing experiences and providing opportunities to encourage everyone that all things are possible when people seek to put ‘first things first”.
So, his wife and his partner’s husband, came to the rehearsal to watch them practice.  They both gave their approval…and the teaching and learning continued.  No more mention was made of this…it wasn’t talked about at all.  But, everyone was talking about how risque Florence Henderson’s dance was.  One judge even called it raunchy…to the delight of the audience.  The one judge, Bruno Potty-Mouth, has something ’off-color’ to say about almost every performance.  And, on top of that…he is just downright mean, at times.
I love to watch good dancing.  The human body can move and glide and spin and cavort in such amazing ways.  It is a testament to the Master Designer who put us together.  And, I realize that some of the Latin dances are correctly done with a certain amount of sexual tension.  But, I think we’ve got it all wrong as an audience when we glorify a grandmother whose dancing is declared ‘raunchy’ instead of a business man who seeks to honor his wife in all he does.
Thank-you, I feel better since I’ve said my piece.

AN UPDATE AT GATHERINGS

October 28, 2010 by tonja 1 Comment

Evidently my blog needed an update, or a change over or a something.  I didn’t know it…how would I?  There is no little light that comes on that says “YOUR BLOG NEEDS ATTENTION”…..see authorized dealer.  Kind of like the light on my car that tells me to have the car serviced or to check my oil or something else that I don’t understand.

Anyway…Ian, my computer whiz kid said I did.  And, so he did something or other…and I did not even know it!!!

This doesn’t look like him, really……he doesn’t wear glasses.  🙂

So, he changed it to something.  And, it made it faster.  And, took out the bad things.  In fact, he did a great job on everything, except one.  The post that was up when he worked his magic was gone.  “Sure”, he said, “I can find it but it will take me hours and days because it is all crushed up with all kinds of stuff on top of it now.”  Now what would you have said?  I said, “Not to worry, it’s not that important.  I’ll either rewrite it or just let it go.”  And, I tried to rewrite it, but couldn’t remember all the details.  Because, if I don’t write the details down, I totally lose them in this brain of mine.  And, all the details I had written down were now all crunched up, with stuff and stuff on top.  So, I was gonna just forget it.  I mean really, now.  In the grand scheme of things, how much is it going to matter to world peace if I lose a post?

Well, that sweet boy…whom is so very like me, may I add…sent me an e-mail yesterday with the whole original post.  I was so excited…but, I surely didn’t expect him to go looking for it.   The only thing is that while it was up some friends had commented on it, and I thought to myself…”This is going to make them wonder what happened.  They will think they dreamed that post.  Then they will be all stressed out and in a bad mood.”  And, I would never do such to you, my bloggy friends!  So for those of you who didn’t read it the first time…here it is again…your second chance.  And, if you were one of the ones in a bad mood because it was gone…I hope I have (or Ian has) set things right again.

The original DWTS post follows………

This doesn’t look exactly like me either…….I DO wear glasses.

CANDY CORN and CRAFT

October 25, 2010 by tonja 9 Comments

Does this picture make your mouth water? I’m a candy corn lover. When I buy a bag, I open it and pour it into a big zip-lock. Then, I pour in a big handful or two or three of peanuts. I shake it up well, and then, dig in! Yummy!

However, there are some other ways to use this confection. From Women’s Day magazine, check out these fun crafts.

Simply find a branch from the backyard and secure it into pot. Then just hot glue candy corn in groups of two or three. Simple. Cute.

This one takes a little more time. Purchase Styrofoam balls in your desired size. Spray paint with orange spray paint. (DUH…what else would you spray paint orange with?) Then hot glue the candy tightly in rows with the largest end next to the ball. Then pop into a flower pot or urn filled with more candy.

I’m quite sure I do not need to give any instructions with this one!

Now this one is just a little more difficult. Purchase a Styrofoam wreath and cover with wide black ribbon. Then begin hot gluing the candy on in circular patterns, alternating the direction of the candy. Finish off with another strip of the black ribbon to hang.

If you wish to save these to use another year…spray them with a clear acrylic sealer.

PLAY DAYS AT THE CREEKHOUSE

October 21, 2010 by tonja 8 Comments

Today I was blessed with the most handsome little visitor. Sweet John Thomas came to play. Oh, he is such a delight! Just beginning to walk, and developing a personality all his own. Such determination! We ate breakfast together, then he took a little nap. Then we went for a ride. I don’t have a stroller, but I do have a wagon. So, off we went…down the driveway, up the street to the circle and back again. Then a stop to play with the pumpkins in the wheelbarrow, and finally a few minutes to rest in the swing. He had a little something to drink, and then we were able to go out and play with Finn and Alex a while. Such fun! His parents, Tara and Will are doing a wonderful job with him! Such blessings…God is good to us!

The next day, my friend, Lucy Jane, came to play. She was all dressed in fall colors, and was ready to have some fun. It has been a while since she had visited, so she had to get reacquainted with Finn. Oh! But Finn was happy to see her! We decided we would build a turkey…..out of a pumpkin and some wood cutouts. It was so beautiful outside, that Finn and Alex came out to help. Good thing they did. Cause Lucy Jane could not get the feathers in…and I could not get the feathers in, and it was hard for Alex to get the feathers in…but he did! And, soon…we had ourselves a very cute Tom Turkey!

Then later on that afternoon, Sweet John Thomas came back to stay for a while. He was rested and ready to play. So play, we did!

Always, ALWAYS, take time to play!
