CHRISTMAS DECOR…2009…Part 2

December 10, 2009 by tonja 1 Comment

Continuing with my Christmas decor…

This is a wreath I made using pages from an old book. It really was a terrible old paperback that had no redeeming value. I tore each page out, rolled and glued it, then glued it to a foam wreath form…

Here is a close-up. And, you’ll never guess which room I put this BOOK wreath in….why the LIBRARY, of course!

Now, here’s the kitchen. This display is on the storage buffet piece…This is my favorite piece of furniture in the house. It is useful, and there are 2 surfaces for seasonal decor.

On the top left are 2 rosemary topiaries…with a little Christmas finery added…

In the center is this old chalkware nativity carving…

Inside the little niche, I covered all with a holly and twig garland. On the right is a stack of my Christmas books, topped off with a jar of little rag balls. A little red plate, found this year at Pier 1, sits beside the books. [Loved this dessert plate, with the church on it…wish they made it in a larger size. I just bought one…to use for display]
Next is a sign on the back of the niche, that says ‘Christmas Spirit Gathers Here’…in front of which sits a red bowl full of small white shimmery balls.
Next is a little Christmas box…that I want to show you in detail…later on…and a red platter that matches the bowl. Oh, the little sign in front says…”You better not pout”. Someone stuck it up there…didn’t notice till later!

Never have I been so lax in getting my house decorated for Christmas. But, then, never have I decorated THIS house for Christmas. And, never have I had to contend with the things I have had to deal with this year. Oh, well, IT IS WHAT IT IS…
I bought some things to decorate the outside today. Never have I not had my outside decor up at least by December 1…but, never have I had to figure out how to hang a wreath or anything else, WITHOUT putting a ***nail in the wall…or the rock…or the brick…or the mortar*** (thanks to DH)

The teachers at FP are all coming to my house for a luncheon Tuesday. So, I MUST have everything finished…or I’ll never hear the end of it! Only kidding! Can hardly wait for us all to be together again!

CHRISTMAS DECOR …2009…Part 1

December 9, 2009 by tonja No Comments

I finally have some pictures to show you of my Christmas Decor. First is the front foyer…here I used a woodland theme to tie in with the furnishings already there. I have several pines that I have collected over the years. Also here is the surprise gift of the Holy Family I received last week…

Next is the dining room…this is what I have on my dining room table…

Aren’t these the most wonderful trees? I think they are so unusual. And, they were found in my Pop’s attic while we were getting his decorations down. Why these were there is a mystery to me. These are not something my Mother would have liked…or bought. Joy nor I can either one remember her ever using them. So, I have no idea how old they are. There is a wreath that my friend, Tina, gave me several years ago. I know you can’t tell from the pictures, but the foliage on the wreath is exactly the same as on parts of the tree! Neat, huh?

This is a ‘GATHERING’ of greenery and candlesticks I have assembled on the mantle…

And, here is the scene on the buffet. My collection of feather trees and funky angels!

In the corner is this sad little tree. I have a collection of tiny kitchen utensils, candy canes and gingerbread cookies!

And, finally, here is a little wire tree filled with tiny mercury glass ornaments…some very old!

That’s all I have time to do today…more to come!

WEARING CHRISTMAS

December 9, 2009 by tonja No Comments

This is my good friend D.S.  Most people think she is a quiet, mild-mannered, easy going girl.  However, I know the REAL D.  She teaches at my former school and is a wild and crazy girl!  I love her!!  She has a small problem though…she doesn’t want to buy her daughter the cool shoes she needs!!!  Right,AC?

Anyway…she was looking extra spiffy today and I decided to make her picture.  And, to be truthful, she is wearing the newest shirt I designed.  Everyone seems to love the colors this year.  It is really different than anything I’ve done before!  Thanks for modelling for me, D!

******************************
Don and Alex left yesterday for a trip to Birmingham to see  a new eye doctor.  The doctor that did the surgery on him several months ago, wanted him to see another specialist to see if there was anything that could be done about his double vision.  Personally, I do not think there is.  From what all the doctors through the years have said, the damage to the optic nerve and muscle is what is causing the double vision and the jumping of the eye.  It is coming from the brain. And the atrophy of the cerebellum is the culprit.   The vision was an eye problem which is why it could be fixed.
I could very well be wrong…and I hope I am.  They will be home tonight, so we’ll see.

I am taking Adam back to Birmingham tomorrow for yet another surgery on his eye.  I thought this was the last…but, alas!  there will still be one more.  We should be back Friday night.

******************************
And, in between, I am trying to finish up my Christmas decorating.  I am putting all the boxes back in the storage room this afternoon…and what is not done…will not be done.  It can wait till next year!  I suppose I have had a harder time than usual this year because it is the first time I have decorated for Christmas in the Creek House.  So, I’m having to decide what I want to do where.

******************************
Hope your decorating and cooking and holiday spirit is keeping you happy and contented .

A SMALL ANNOYANCE

December 8, 2009 by tonja No Comments

I do!  I really do love blogging!  But, lately, I have begun having ‘spam’ problems, and I do not like it!  Actually, I keep getting these stupid comments from ‘anonymous’…that are about  all sorts of crazy things.  I do NOT want to have the crazy letters for everyone to have to type in to comment.  I, personally, despise those things.  But, is there any other way to prevent it?  I have some friends who comment as Anonymous…but then sign their name at the bottom.

I do not have time to mess with this right now.  Christmas is upon us and I have better things to do than try to keep my blog site neat and tidy.  I’m having trouble enough trying to keep my home neat and tidy!  If you have a suggestion, please pass it along.  I realize that, in the grand scheme of things, this is minor.  But, it is really bugging this blogger.

Thanks for any help you may can give!

Hope to post pictures of my Christmas decorations tomorrow!

THE WORD OF THE DAY

December 4, 2009 by tonja No Comments

The word for the day is ‘FAMILY’. I have been reminded all day of what a blessing it is to be a part of a family. You know, just the word itself gives me a warm feeling. There are so many feelings wrapped up in those 6 little letters that are gathered together to make up the word. It brings to mind UNITY, SAFETY, CONCERN, HUGS, SUPPORT, and, of course, LOVE.

I have been helping out at school this week, and catching up on the lives of so many of my dear friends. It has felt like a big, warm hug just being with them.  Today, one of my friends, RB, brought a book for me to see. We share an affinity for books. And, she knows how much I love old books. She shared the story of this book with me.

It seems that it was given to her husband, B, when he was just a year old. It was about a little boy who was in a Christmas Concert.   The front cover had fallen off, and the pages were yellowed and obviously well read. It had become a family tradition to read it, and both their daughters had grown to love the book as much as he did.

It was such an innocent little book. It told of the little boy who would go into the forest and play his flute for the animals. He was always late, and was, again, for his Christmas Concert.   It was just the sweetest little story. No publisher, or copyright was evident. R had begun searching for a copy of the book to give to her daughters. Finally she located it. Of course, it was out of print. But, her plan is to try to have a copy for her daughters as they move away from home and start lives of their own. Then they can in turn, keep the joy they shared as a family with this book, alive into the next generation. I think it is a precious idea! And, I wish her luck in finding 2 copies! R, thanks for sharing this book with me today. It was delightful!  May God continue to bless your family.

****************************************
Then, it was off to meet Joy over at Pop’s.  We finished up the decorating for Christmas, and headed over to the cemetery.  I had been working on a little Christmas tree to go on Mother’s grave.  And, we wanted to get it up.  When we drove up, we were taken with the beauty of the trees growing there.  It was like they were on fire!

First, Pop had to take care of the housekeeping, and clean the leaves and grass that had blown there.

And, we placed the tree in the vase.  This tree that is growing next to her grave is one that Pop had planted there.  He and Joy had found a wooden red bird to hang from its branches.   I love it!

Here is a close up of her little tree.  Kind of plain, but I think it is just the way she would have liked it.  Now, she did love to decorate her house with lots of glitz and shiny, ornate things.  But, she would NOT have wanted that on her tree here.  She would have thought that way too ostentatious for this peaceful resting place.  But, I could not resist adding the bird.

So,on this coldest day of the year…so far… our little original family of 4 gathered together to remember and celebrate Mom’s life.  We gathered to cling to each other, and celebrate the life we are living now without her.  For as hard as it is to know she is gone, we still have a blessed life.  We have each other, and our husbands, and our children,  grandchildren, and our family in NC and GA.  We have a promise of life all together again.  We are a family…on this earth for now…and in Heaven to come.  Oh, what peace and comfort that is!
****************************************
While we were at Pop’s, we were tidying up some of the house, and changing out some decor.  I picked up this beautiful piece that I had given Mom for Christmas many years ago.  For some reason, I turned it over to look on the bottom.  A note had been atached there, and in a familiar handwriting, were the words, “Tonja, this is for you now.  I have enjoyed it so very much.  Thank-you, Love Mom.”  I thought all the words from my Mom were gone forever.  But, quite by accident…[though, I know it wasn’t]…she spoke to me again.  I don’t even think I can put into words how that makes me feel.  But, oh, how she blessed me again today.

And, those feelings of family?  The UNITY, and the SUPPORT, and the LOVE…I felt it all today.  Oh, and a HUG, too…a great big hug from my Mama!
