GOOD TV

October 12, 2009 by tonja No Comments

There is so little on TV these days that is worth your time. But, these are 2 that I particularly like.

This is Season 6 for this dance show, and it only gets better. Most of these kids have put in years of practice to earn the right to compete in this show. But, there are also those who have never had a lesson, and they are right up there in the competition. How they get their bodies to move like they do is a mystery to me. They are able to convey such emotion and feeling in their performances. I feel like the whole concept of the show is a testament to the intricacies of the human body. We are truly ‘wonderfully made’.

Did you know there were as many differing types of dance as there are? Each genre has a whole slew of different dances and at different tempos. And, each has its own set of rules. There is, of course, Latin, and Ballroom, and Broadway, and Contemporary and Ballet, to name a few. And, then there are all the new styles…hip-hop, crumping, bead. These are not as clearly defined to me as the afore mentioned styles. They have even added the new Bollywood style, and another Russian style folk dance! So, for a dancer to be proficient in all the styles or to be able to learn it in a week, is amazing. Here you are watching the very best in the dance world.

I think any artist, whether in music, dance, painting, photography,or writing deserves to receive accolades for putting in the work it takes to become a master at what they do.

Then there is Glee. This is just a feel good, fun to watch, silly show. It is quite cleverly written…but not enough to win any awards. It is like a doughnut for the brain…full of sugar, sort of filling, and fun to consume! Enjoy!

And, to prove how diverse my viewing habits are, I will mention here another favorite show that always intrigues the viewer…House. He is such a flawed person. But as hard as he tries, he can not contain the spark of humanity that truly wants to help those who find themselves on his service. This show never disappoints. So, change that # to 3. Actually it is on right now, so TTYL.

WAIT!!!!! I almost forgot the best show of all time, LOST! It has been the best written, most confounding, complex show ever. These writers are genius! You can swear you know what is coming next, but, you’re wrong every time! So clever. They jump up in time…go back in time…even change time. And they do this for each character. A must see…every week! Go ahead, add one more to that #. Commercial’s over…bye!

THE BABY SHOWER

October 11, 2009 by tonja No Comments
Welcome to the Baby Shower…for John Thomas Bush. Scheduled to enter the world around November 28…but predicting he makes an early arrival!

On Thursday afternoon after she finished work, Tina came over to help me get ready. We put together this pretty fall display near the front door. Thanks, Tina, I could not have gotten it together without you!

Front door…

Front door…

View of the table…the theme was ducks…obviously..

Tara and John Thomas Bush

Opening gifts…

…and more…

Joy and Tara with gifts displayed…

Joy at the punchbowl…well, the punch bucket. Our punch (Suzanne’s recipe) was delicious…and yellow. We added food coloring to make it blue. Then floated little yellow ducks in it! Yellow boas around the bottom are duck feathers! Actually it’s looking a tiny bit green, isn’t it?

Lori and Patty talking it over…

What a great time we had! Joy and I have been so fortunate to have wonderful women in our lives since we were little girls. Most of them have been good friends of Mom’s…and involved in church with us. These ladies taught us when we were younger, worshipped with us, and set an example before us as we watched them live their lives. Several of them attended the shower today. It made Joy and I feel so good that these ladies who were such close friends of Mom’s chose to spend time with us yesterday. We felt that it was as if a little of Mom was there with us as we honored Tara and her coming baby.

But, not only that, we also had some young ladies, Laura and Morgan, along with their Mom and Grandmother attending. Joy kept these 2 lovely girls when they were babies up until they started school.

So, we had a nice mix of ages. Sweet friends all.

This is Betty, Neva, Jeanette.

Here is Tara, Tina, and Michelle.

Linnie, Tonja, Dot…

Joy and Tara…Mother and Daughter…GiGi and Mommy…

Before we all left we made some more pics. Crazy Patty was making these pictures! We told her here to please just get the top part of us…she did.

The women in our family…Joy, Lori, Tonja, Tara, Suzanne.

We said, don’t get the bottom of us…our feet hurt…and we all happen to be a little rounder in that general vicinity! She didn’t listen!

Finally…she got it right! But, SHE ain’t right!

Tara with her hostesses.

Also attending were: Shirley and Jayna, who drove over from Moultrie. Jayna and Tara have been very close friends forever! Will’s Mom, Jean, and Tara’s sister in law and good friend, Olivia, and her 2 little ones. April, Pat, Lisa and her Mom. Juanita, Mary, Suzanne’s Mom and Jan and I hope I didn’t leave anyone out! Several of our close friends couldn’t be there due to prior commitments. And several others brought their gifts early.

What an honor to be able to have these sweet celebration in my home. Joy has always been so generous with her daughters through the years, and allowed me to love them and love on them. And, I do love them both dearly. I am so excited for Will and Tara. They will be wonderful parents, and little John Thomas will have a huge family…on both sides…to love and support him as he grows.

Tara is on bedrest until she delivers due to BP problems, but after next week she will be 33 weeks, and that is a milestone she really wants to make (she and her doctors). She had a shower last week and another one today…so I imagine she is going to be ready to rest!

A wonderful day, with good friends, and much to celebrate!

AWARD TIME

October 9, 2009 by tonja No Comments

What a sweet surprise I received from my blogging buddy and fellow “B” Club member, Kat, at Just A Beach Kat. Kat is one of the first friends I made in the blogging world, and I love keeping up with her exciting life! Here are the rules for the award:

1) Present this award to others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.
2) Tell those people they’ve been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.
3) Share “10 Honest Things” about myself.

10 HONEST THINGS ABOUT ME…..

1. I buy too many magazines. And, I do not like to throw them away. So usually I will go through the magazine and pull out pages that I want to keep. Which, in all honesty, does absolutely no good, because I can never find the torn out pages when I go looking for them.

2. I think every occasion calls for a little chocolate!

3. I LOVE pretty paper! I could spend hours in the scrapbooking aisles looking at the decorative papers…and I want it all! I like old paper, and wrinkled paper, and torn paper, and even brown paper bag.

4. I have watched The Young and The Restless since I was in college. I never miss it…I have my DVR set to tape it every day. Sometimes I’ll just watch the whole week on Saturday. Goes a lot faster when you can FF through the dumb commercials! I used to watch All My Children, but it got too ‘out there’…even for a soap!

5. Why should ‘procrastination’ be seen as a problem? If it gets done before the deadline…it’s done!

6. I eat crackers in bed.

7. If I were to light all the candles (new and used) that I have in my house…it would set off all the fire alarms and/or burn the house down!

8. I can not swim very well…in deep water…or shallow water, actually. But, I am a champion floater…on a raft…especially the ones with the cup holder built into the arm.

9. I have a new mattress…a Tempurpedic! It is wonderful! It is fabulous! It is worth every mega buck we spent for it! I think I should probably spend more time in bed so we will get our money’s worth out of it!

10. I started my Christmas shopping last June…but, I won’t finish till the week of Christmas! Trouble staying on task, you know!

And, I pass this on to…

THIS AND THAT

October 8, 2009 by tonja No Comments
I have been working on a grouping of family pictures, and today, I finished. I have looked long and hard to find the pictures to display. Sadly, there does not seem to be a single formal picture of my maternal grandparents anywhere. And, I haven’t found but a few of them taken together. So, for that one, I was forced to blow up a snapshot. I checked with all my aunts while we were in NC last month, and they did not have one either. I actually was surprised that my paternal grandparents had one made. I do not even have one of Don’s grandparents at all.

If you are fortunate to still have your parents or grandparents, encourage them to sit for a portrait. Or, at least, get some good snapshots. You can hire a professional photographer to come to your house and make them, if you’d like. Future generations will want them. Last year, I got Adam to go to Mom and Pop’s house and take pictures of them in their yard and in their rockers on the porch, and in their house. I am so happy that I have these. Also, if you have a big family gatherings of some sort, hire a photographer for an hour or so. The memories you capture will be priceless one day.

*********************************

Just a little decorating tip…
If you have a small space that needs to be filled, here’s a way to fill it without spending much money. This little table is actually a bar stool! This is one of those cheapo kind that you can get at any discount store. This one happens to be approx. 30 inches high. Now, the cover is a 70 inch round tablecloth. See, it fits perfectly! This cloth came from W*l-M*rt for $12.00. If you like the look, you can change out the cloths for the seasons. Stacked on top are decorative boxes from the party store. I store the small ornaments for fall inside. But, it would look just as well with books, or a plant or candle. Yes, I know the boxes aren’t straight…but they will be!

*********************************

New release…Amazon…$9.99
You remember Chynna Phillips from the group Wilson Phillips? Well, she is married to one of the Baldwin brothers. This CD is all Christian music, and the music is all quite nice. It is also available at Lifeway, W*l M*rt, and T*rget.

*********************************

I am getting ready for a special happening at my house on Saturday. Suzanne and Patty are giving my niece, Tara, a baby shower. She is pregnant with a baby boy. His name is John Thomas.

I have had fun gathering all the decorations for the shower…and I can hardly wait to share the decor with you. Tara was recently admitted to the hospital for a week, due to High Blood Pressure. So, work is finished till after her sweet boy is born.

*********************************

And, on a personal note…Thanks Princess Shirley, for calling to check on me today. Knowing that you are thought of and missed is a wonderful feeling. Thanks for caring! (She thought I must be sick since I had not posted all week!) Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

FALL FLING…..ACT 3

October 3, 2009 by tonja No Comments
And, Day 3 of the Fling dawned crisp and clear and beautiful up on top of the mountain. (Why, yes! That IS my halo showing! But, I don’t like to brag…)

We ate breakfast at the motel, and then made our way the 20 or so miles to the tiny town of Gay, GA. Here they hold the Cotton Pickin’ Fair every Fall and Spring. It is not the best show that we have been to, but it is a fun one. There is always wonderful food. ***Why is it that anything eaten outside is always scrumptious? And, whether you need it or not, you are always hungry once you smell the delicious aromas.***

This huge old barn contains wonderful antique vendors. There is always great things to see and wonder about here. Lots of old ‘stuff’, with lots of wear and tear. I found a pair of lamps, and a few other treasures inside!

Here is the back of the car BEFORE we even got to the craft show! OH! MY! Is there room for more treasures?

Why, of course, there’s room! And, there go Tina and Shirl back to the car with our first load of goodies! I chose to rest my tootsies so we could keep going when they got back!

Here is a lovely scene set up by one of the vendors inside. And,she had such great treasures! We all found some wonderful things we just had to have from her! She had great hand poured candles full of wonderful scents! I am burning Brown Sugar…it’s divine!

Our friend, Jan, had a booth outside. She sells clay beads and the necklaces to string them on. Her booth is very eye catching in pink and brown. We helped her put out her wares when we first got there! Good Luck, Jan!

We made our rounds and saw all there was to see. I found a wonderful bench that I NEEDED so badly in my foyer…but alas! there was no room to bring it home. There is also a stage set up on the grounds and all day you can hear local talent singing and dancing and having a ‘good ‘ole time’…just as you would imagine a good old country fair to be!

Then we made our way to the car and began our trip home. We wanted to get my rugs and lamps into place before Shirl had to leave. So, a quick stop in Columbus for a sandwich, and home we go. Talking and discussing, and solving problems all the way. Now if everybody would just listen to us, the world would be much better off!!!

Look, we got the rugs into place…and the new pillows…

…and added a few more pieces to the top of the cabinet…

…placed and plugged in the new/old lamps…

…added a few finishing touches…

…posed for a picture…

…and one more quick hug…

…and, it was over. The Great Fall Fling of 2009 was history. Shirl, bless her heart, still had to drive 2 hours to get home to Moultrie. We try to change up where we leave from occasionally so sometimes it is Tina and I who have to drive the extra 2 hours home.

I do not take for granted the blessing of our friendship. These 2 girls own a piece of my heart. They hold it carefully and tend it and treasure it. And, I, theirs, as well. I am richer in spirit and love because of them. My true self is safe with them, and I am a better ‘me’ because they are in my life.

And so, this ends the flings of 2009….to be resumed Spring 2010!

*********************************

PS: This is the homliest, saddest, most pitiful looking doll. We found her in the antique barn, and I just wanted to share her with you. I probably should have brought her home so she could have lived here in the Creek House. However, the lamps won out. Sorry, Dolly…
