A VERY FULL WEEK END…..Part 1…Saturday

June 21, 2010 by tonja 3 Comments

VBS…’Vacation” Bible School…vacation is sort of a misnomer. ‘Vacation’ for the kids…maybe…but not the teachers!!! I may sound as if I’m complaining, but really, I’m not at all. I love VBS and always have. However, this is the first year that we have had just a one day event. We started this morning at 8:00 and ended at 4:30. Whew! Now that was a long day! And, my little preschoolers did very well…up until the last hour. By then…they had had enough of this ‘vacation’ and they were ready to go home!

We started our morning with the pledges and songs. Then, we came to our classes. After a bit of getting aquainted, and songs and games…we had our first Bible story…Adam and Eve. Did you know that the first job that God gave Adam to do was to name the animals. It was Adam who decided what they should be called. ( How did he, the first person in the world, decide what to name each one. Where did he get the vocabulary and the knowledge that it would take to think of all those names?) Those are not preschool questions, I just wonder that myself. I suppose God instilled in him the knowledge he would need.

We then broke up into 3 groups and began our exploration of different things. Some of you may know this, but some may not. The way Baptist literature is written, learning takes place in every thing that is done while they are in your care. As the activities are done, the teachers are retelling the Bible story. They are directing the learning that is taking place through the activities.

The children made fishing poles. And when they caught the ‘fish’…they found characteristics of Jesus listed on each one. Playing and learning…they go together so well. Top pic…teacher, Monty Clark…Bottom picture…teachers…Deeya Herring and her teenage daughter and great teacher, as well, Victoria. And, April Cobb, standing. In these pictures, they are making puppets that look like themselves. We are learning that, “I am wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14. We all look different, and are all made special! Here are some beautiful faces showing off their work…precious souls.

Then we had a wonderful lunch, and because our bodies are ‘wonderfully made’, they need a little rest when they are tired……..and, so we rested……some of us.

We managed to stay prone for about 20 minutes, then we got up and began to MOVE!

Afterwards, we had second Bible story. We learned how Jesus took a little boy’s lunch, blessed it and used it to feed 5000 people. The children learned that that’s what we call a miracle. And, another miracle was that there were 12 baskets left over! After the story, we broke into small groups to continue our learning.

First pic shows, how the children decorated and cut out a shape in a slice of bread. Ummmmm, YUMMY! And, then the children worked on making their own puzzles. They were able to take these home and put them together there!

And posing with Mrs Tonja…the ranch hand!

A little outside play….and snacks….and sidewalk chalk. But, not too long…it was really hot outside!

And after another group time to review what we had learned today, it was time for them to gather their things and go home. You know, some of these children I will probably never see again. But, they were brought into the lives of we four teachers for 8 hours today. Some of them are from families that will never attend church. Some of them may never even have a chance to visit a church again for a long time, if ever. My deepest hope is that some of the words they heard today will stay safely tucked into their hearts until such time as God chooses to bring it to their mind again. If all we planted was the fact that church is a nice place to be, so be it. If all they remember is that the Bible is more precious than gold…..maybe it will encourage them to pick it up again in some motel room or hospital. It is not necessary to us teachers of children that we see the words and thoughts and scriptures we planted come to fruition….it is just our jobs to plant them. Along the way, some one else may water them, and God will allow them to bloom in His time. God bless the children who blessed us with their presence today.

FATHER’S DAY

June 19, 2010 by tonja 5 Comments

Tomorrow is Father’s Day. And, I bet you a shiny red apple that I will hear him say tomorrow, “Every day is Father’s Day.” And, he really feels that way!

Last year, on Father’s Day, my Mom had the whole family together at her house. She was sick and did not feel like cooking and preparing for us. I know that Pop stayed right with her for 2 days, helping her with whatever she asked of him….peeling potatoes, shicking and cleaning corn…whatever was hardest for her. He knew how much she wanted to have us all and he wanted it for her as much as she did. As it turned out, that was the last time we all ate one of her most wonderful meals.

Now, Pop wants us all to eat with him, at his house, tomorrow. And, Joy, great sister and daughter that she is, has cooked all the food. Looking forward to us all being together. Ian came home last night so he could be here with us, too.

So…just sharing some pictures that are special to me…

Our little family, many years ago…

On one of many trips to NC, Pop would pull off the road when he saw a good place. And, he would get Alex or Ian or Adam out of the carseat, and take them for a short walk to stretch their legs…and his, too, I imagine! Here he is with little Alex…love this pic.

My family around 1986. My boys have been blessed with Donald as their Father. He is a Godly man, and has set the highest example for his sons.

A sweet picture, though not clear, of Don, his father and Adam…in 1975.

Happy Father’s Day to all…but especially to my Pop!

BRIDAL SHOWER

June 14, 2010 by tonja 7 Comments

Just a quick report that the shower today for the son of one of my dearest friends was a great success. We had wonderful attendance, yummy food, and delightful company! Plus the couple got loads of wonderful gifts. It was good to see several friends I have missed over the past few months.

My friend, Pam, said something to her future daughter in law after the guests had left. I do not think she would mind me sharing. She said, ” These ladies are dear Christian friends I’ve known over 20 years. Though we all used to go to the same church, now we are members of several different churches. But, the friendship remains. I can always count on them and they on me. I hope as you start your married life, you begin your own set of friends that will mean as much to you.” I heartily agree! Here, then, are some pictures from the day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ADAM !

June 3, 2010 by tonja 7 Comments

Thirty -five years ago, I became a Mother. My first son was born…Adam Ryan Owens. I was only 10 at the time…just kidding!! 🙂 Actually, I was 22. He was a delightful baby, the first grand baby on both sides, and adored by all. My dreams for him were the same dreams every mother has for her newborn child. I wanted him to be happy, and healthy, breeze through school, get married to a beautiful wife, and raise a family…who would be happy and healthy, ….and , you know it…it’s the same dream we all have for our children, isn’t it?

The thing is, life is not always going to work out according to our dreams. There are bumps, detours, even roadblocks on the road of life. Sometimes you even have to turn around and take a different road. Adam has had quite a few of these rough places to go through. But, he’s made it through, and has the beautiful wife, and a photography business that is growing, and he has the ‘happy’. If you have never read his story, look on my side bar, under the picture of the Brothers. God has had His hand on Adam from the very beginning 35 years ago, and continues to lead him now. I am so very proud of him! Following are a few pictures through the years…

At 6 months…Joy’s wedding…

HERO IN A VAN

May 30, 2010 by tonja 5 Comments

For some reason, I have never been close to anyone who has been off to a war. That I know of, at least. There is a possibility that some of my cousins may have gone to serve…and if they have…speak up, family…let me know. My Pop was in the Navy, and my niece’s husband is in the Guard.

But recently, I found myself sharing a ride with a hero. There was me, and 2 couple riding on a tourist van. Let’s call them Back Couple and Side couple. I was alone for just a few minutes, and then at a motel stop, two couples came to ride with me. They were all prepared for a day on the beach. From the way the were acting, I do not think they knew each other.

Back Man…”This is the life, no working, just laying out and playing all day. I could really get used to this.”

Back Woman…”Seems to me you have gotten used to it, but, it’s time to grow up and get a job.”

Back Man…”Watch out woman. We’re paying our bills and we got food on the table. The kids have toys, and we are on a fine vacation.”

Back Woman…”That’s because I’m working double shifts at the hospital…and I am tired. I want to be able to spend some time with the kids.”

Back Man…”Well, you know how hard it is to get a job.” Then addressing the Side Man, he said, “What kind of work do you do?”

Side Man…”Well, I’m not working at all right now. But, I plan to get busylooking next week. I’ve got a baby on the way!”

Back Man says to Side Woman…”You working?”

Side Woman…”Yes, I’ve been cleaning houses. That’s the only thing I could find. But, it’s paying well.

Back Man to Side Man…”Well, Man, you just need to take it easy. Let your Old Lady work. You got no worries!”

Side Man…”No, this vacation is my time to take it easy. I’ll be finding a job next week. Then she can rest.”

Back Man…” How long you been out of work, Man?”

Side Man…” Oh, I haven’t been out of work. I’ve been in Afghanistan, and Iraq.”

Back Man…”You are crazy! You couldn’t pay me to go over there. All that shooting and bombs and those crazy folks that live there. You get shot at much?”

Side Man…with a quick glance at his wife…”Nah, not much.”

Side Woman…”I’m just glad to have him home. And, he doesn’t have to go back.”

Back Man…”Well, I wouldn’t have gone over there in the first place. You crazy, Man. You can’t tell what those folks will do. No, you wouldn’t ever see me going over there.”

Back Woman…looking very disgusted at the Back Man…” No, you wouldn’t have gone. You won’t even work in the States, you sure wouldn’t work overseas in the army. That’s way too much work for you.” She finished her sentence and then turned her back and looked out the window.

Back Man looked around, chest puffed out, wanting the rest of us passengers to see what a fine man he was.

Side Woman looked up at her husband and smiled.

Side Man leaned over and kissed her. She lay her head on his shoulder.

Older, But Still Cute, Woman…looking at the Side Man…”Excuse me, Sir, but I’d like to thank you for being willing to serve our country. I appreciate you and your wife for sacrificing for people like me. To me, you are a hero.”

Side Man: with tears in his eyes,”It was my privilege, Ma’am…my privilege.”

And,the five of us rode in silence to the beach drop off. Side Man and Woman got off, smiling and anxious to go play in the beautiful sand and surf.

The Back Man got up and walked to the front of the bus. He turned around and looked at Back Woman, who was still sitting and looking out the window, “Woman, You coming?”

She slowly got up and followed him. He ran off, fancy free, while she was struggling with two floats and a big beach bag and towels. I watched out the window as the Side Man and Side Woman noticed her. They went to her and took the floats and the bag…and the three of them walked off toward the beach…

I rode on, alone, to the hotel. I’ve thought of that many times since then…and today seemed to be the time to share.

Happy Memorial Day!
