THE GIFT…THE GIVER…THE GIVING…part 2

January 5, 2011 by tonja 6 Comments

I have been wracking my brain trying to remember back through the years. What gifts have really made an impression on me. Which ones do I keep in that special room in my heart. You know the one…you have one in your heart, too. It’s that room that holds those things that touch you to the core. Those things that stroke your soul. Those things that make you swell with love so big you think you’re gonna burst…or at least cry for a while. These, then, are the memories of some of those things.

Before I start, I need to say something. I know that some of the best gifts are not tangible. Some are gifts of time. Some are gifts of a much needed hug. Some are just a listening ear. I know that these gifts rate just as high as a gift that comes in a box, nestled in tissue and tied with a beautiful bow. But, just for today, I will talk about those given specifically as a gift , for the sake of this post.

Don and I married in 1972. One of the first gifts he gave me was a set of sheets. For our first Christmas together. A set of dark green sheets. A set of cheap dark green sheets…the kind that are rough on your legs and other delicate areas. A set of sheets. Let me just say this in the nicest way possible …. He will NEVER even THINK of giving me sheets again. Never. But, I digress…this is not about those gifts that were better left at the store.

We had Adam in 1975. He was the first grandchild, on both sides. He was also the first nephew for all our siblings. And, as such, was always the center of attention. Don’s sister, Beth, married Steve…and Steve was an artist. He never followed art as a profession, and I don’t know if he even still paints. But…he painted this treasure for Don and I.

This is of Adam’s old tennis shoes. I love this painting! I love what it stands for without speaking a word. A little boy who has worn all the good out of these shoes. He must have run and jumped and played. He must have had a great time in these shoes. Just like little boys should do. This became more dear to me because we had just found out that Adam had a particularly fast form of cancer. I didn’t know if he would live to wear out another pair of shoes or not. It was a hard time, but it was a time that taught us great lessons, as well as built within us a great faith. This picture reminds me that God is ALWAYS in control. And, He can give little boys the chance to wear out many, many shoes! Thanks, Steve! This painting is a treasure still!

Let me tell you a quick funny about Adam and his shoes. My sweet son loved clothes and shoes and always, ALWAYS wanted to look his best. Shirts and pants ironed…pleats just right. Very OCD about his clothes. He and his brothers all had some Converse Hi-tops when they were in style. They were cool and they were stylin’. But especially Adam since he was the oldest.

When he was in the 7th grade, he came to me one day and said, “Mom, I put my shoes (Converse Hi-Tops) on the ironing board. I need you to iron the tongue.” Have you ever heard such? I’m pretty sure I remember flying around the room and trying to keep my head from popping off. And, yes, that was smoke coming out of my ears! And, that VERY SAME DAY….. Adam learned to iron! Oh Yes! we had a lesson before school and another one after school. And, the job of ironing his pants and shirts and SHOES became his! And, you know what? I NEVER IRONED A SINGLE SHOE…N.E.V.E.R.! And he never again asked me to, either! I would still iron his dress clothes, but all the others were his. Funny thing is…it wasn’t long before he did ALL his ironing…he preferred HIS ironing over mine! Now THAT’S a boy who makes his Mama proud!

This is a plate that Mom gave me quite a few years ago. I love the colors and the glazes. She knew I would like it, because it was of a sunflower. And, she was right. Another one of those times when she though about what I would like…

She was so proud to give me this Lladro figurine. Her heart was always so tender toward Alex. It broke her heart that he suffered so much. She would bring him muffins and cookies, and his fav macaroni and cheese. She would make him real mashed potatoes and she would bring him cherries as soon as they came out in the grocery store. When we moved into The Creek House, she went out and bought him 2 sets of some fine sheets…they are so soft and feel divine. She took them and had them monogrammed. She knew Alex would appreciate this. She knew he was in bed most of the time and this would make it a little nicer. So, this little piece was just a reminder from her to me of how much she loved him.

And, on one of our trips…she, Joy, and I…she bought me this mirror. Some of my friends call me The Queen…and she thought it was a great mirror. I love it! It is one of my prized possessions.

I’ll stop here for now. But, I’ll be back…I’ve got more!

SCENES FROM CHRISTMAS 2010

December 30, 2010 by tonja 10 Comments

Here are pictures from Christmas at the Creek House…

Ian bought his Christmas gifts before he came home.  And, he decided to go to Baby’s R Us to get something for Suzanne.  He obviously had fun looking around, and he told me it was surprising all the things that they made for babies now.  We all got a big laugh when Suzanne opened her gift from him!  He wants Little Levi to wear this often!

He loves sweet little John Thomas, and the feeling is certainly mutual.  Hopefully he is learning some good skills to use when Levi gets here.

John Thomas was such a joy to have around on Christmas.  We all had fun with him and he was so good.  His very smart Mom and Dad have wisely made music a part of his  life every day…and he loves it!  Actually, when he hears music, he begins moving his hands up and down like he’s leading music.  No, he doesn’t even know about that, but that’s what it looks like to us!  Almost as an afterthought, I got him this little snowman.  He sings and sways as he sings Deck the Halls.  Great idea, Tonja!  Let me just say that if you hear Deck the Halls 1329 times in one day, it begins to get a little weary…but he loved it every.single.time.

Ian has been the official turkey carver for the past several years.  But, this year, he said it was time for Alex to learn.  So, here those 2 clowns are…in MY aprons…carving our Christmas Turkey!

Here’s Joy and John Thomas

Finn wanted to join in on the fun…

And, let me show you my favorite gift from the day.  It is from Alex.  This is one of my personal mottos…and he has observed it through the years.  Thanks, Alex…I love it

The Owens’ Family…..

The McKibben Family…..

The Cousins……….

Wish I knew how to make those last 3 larger.  Sorry.

On Christmas Eve, it is our tradition to have a meal of boiled shrimp and cheese biscuits.  This year, Don also got lobster claws and crab claws.  Suzanne is not a big seafood fan, and it really is not my favorite.  So, I made she and I some potato soup.  Here are the boys chowing down.  I don’t know why it required so much mess on the island!

Tonja…Pop…Joy

Tina and Patty came  over on Christmas Eve and helped me with a few things…..I love these 2 girls!

Ian woke me up on Sunday morning to say “see you later”…

Don has a few words of wisdom for him to mull over on his trip home….

He pulls out of the driveway, looks back to wave once more, and sets his sights toward Birmingham.  Don and I head inside…..he to read the paper,  me back to bed.  And, this ends the Christmas doings for 2010.

But, it’s not really over , is it?  Not until every Santa,  elf, wreath, ornament, garland, tree, candle, holly, wrapping paper, bow, ribbon, and beautiful angel is put away to wait for next year.

Oh, and those little ornament hooks, you know the small ones?  They have a way of hooking themselves on to the bottom of couches and rugs and pillows and…….

2 DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

December 23, 2010 by tonja 5 Comments

“If you aren’t on the nice list by now, it’s probably too late. Sorry.”

CHRISTMAS EVE’S EVE LAMENT

“The gift shopping’s finished,

The wrapping?  Just some.

The menu is planned,

Grocery shopping?  Not done…

The house is all ready…..

but I’m in projects knee deep;

Oh, please, may I…please, can I,

add some days to this week?”

THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRISTMAS
Santa lives at the North Pole.
JESUS is everywhere.

Santa rides in a sleigh
JESUS rides on the wind and walks on the water.

Santa comes but once a year
JESUS is an ever present help.

Santa fills your stockings with goodies
JESUS supplies all your needs.

Santa comes down your chimney uninvited
JESUS stands at your door and knocks.. and then enters your heart.

You have to stand in line to see Santa
JESUS is as close as the mention of His name.

Santa lets you sit on his lap
JESUS lets you rest in His arms.

Santa doesn’t know your name, all he can say is “Hi little boy or girl, What’s your name?”
JESUS knew our name before we did. Not only does He know our name,
He knows our address too. He knows our history and future and He even knows
how many hairs are on our heads.

Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly
JESUS has a heart full of love.

All Santa can offer is HO HO HO
JESUS offers health, help and hope.

Santa says “You better not cry”
JESUS says “Cast all your cares on me for I care for you.

Santa’s little helpers make toys
JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts, repairs broken homes and builds mansions.

Santa may make you chuckle but
JESUS gives you joy that is your strength.

While Santa puts gifts under your tree
JESUS became our gift and died on the tree.

It’s obvious there is really no comparison.
We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about.
We need to put Christ back in Christmas.

Jesus is still the reason for the season.                        copied

And one more to smile on…..

There once was a little boy who loved to sit and listen to his grandmother tell him stories from the Bible.  He paid very close attention, and drank in all she taught.  One  day he came up to her as she was washing the dishes and said, “Grandmother, can I ask you a question?”  Drying her hands, she looked at him and said, “Of course you can.  What would you like to know?”  “It’s about the Christmas story, ” he said.  “I was just wondering which of those virgins is the mother of Baby Jesus?”  She thought surely he must have misunderstood something she said, and was about to explain it again when he said, “Is it the Virgin Mary or the King James Virgin?”

BLAST FROM THE PAST

December 20, 2010 by tonja 3 Comments

I had big plans for today.  So much to do…and time is not going to stop for me.  However, my body would not cooperate with me today, so, I’ve spent it on the couch instead.  To pass the time, I’ve taken a little trip through the Internet.  Somewhere along the way,  I ran across these old ads.  I thought they were a hoot!  Couldn’t get away with running some of these today!  Enjoy!

Remember the days when you would gather your extended family and go look at typewriters?  🙂

Already wrapped in a beautiful gift box for your convenience!  Now, will someone please unwrap Santa?

I sincerely hope Mom and Dad don’t expect all 5 boys to share just one bike!

Have you ever tried to iron while sitting?  Could be why the Rid-Jid company went out of business so soon!

I would have been happy with one of these.  Wait a minute!  I HAD one of these!  Really!

We had a big white Plymouth Fury…but I don’t remember ever getting this excited about it!

So glad these went out of style before I was old enough to wear them…I’m afraid my OCD tendencies would have run wild trying to keep the seams straight!   But, cute shoes!

Two front teeth?  That’s all?  Sure?

I can assure you this would NOT be a beautiful way to say ‘Merry Christmas” at my house.

And remember…”Always use Christmas Seals.”

THE WEEK IN REVIEW…..condensed

December 12, 2010 by tonja 6 Comments

The Deep South is in a Deep Freeze!  It is cold!  Very cold…it was 25 degrees at 6 am, and now…at 2 pm, it is only 35 degrees!  And, it’s getting a lot lower tonight.  Why, we even had snow flurries here in our fair city this week!   Just so you know…this is not my idea of a good time!  It’s not supposed to get this cold here!  Anyway, I thought it would be an excellent day for soup.  And…that’s something I can make!  I mean, how can you mess up soup?  Can’t you just add anything and everything and stir it up and call it soup?  🙂

Well, as you know, the kitchen is not where my talents lie.  But, I can make this soup…even I know this is not hard.  This is Paula Deen’s recipe…and, it’s a good one.

POTATO SOUP

1 bag frozen hash-brown potatoes…(30 oz. bag)

2 cans chicken broth…(14 oz can)

1 can cream of chicken soup…(10.75 oz. can)

1/2 cup chopped onion…(now, personally, I do not like to smell, touch, peel, slice, or chop onions.  Did you know that you can buy a pkg. of  frozen, chopped onions!  Isn’t that the most wonderful invention?   So, now my soup can have onions in it, too!)

1/3 t. ground black pepper…(that’s not even enough to mess with, is it?)

1 pkg cream cheese….softened…(8 oz.)

In a 6 quart electric slow cooker, combine potatoes, broth, soup, onion, and pepper.  Cover, and cook on low for 5 hours.  Then, stir in cream cheese…and cook for 30 more minutes…stir occasionally until combined.  Garnish with green onion, if desired.   But if you desire  grated cheese  or crumbled bacon. that’s OK, too!

Serves 4

That’s it…easy enough that even Tonja can do it!  I serve it with cornbread muffins.  And, no. No, I don’t fix a dessert.  There’s ice cream in the freezer!

************************************************************************

FYI:  I wrote this earlier in the week.  The weather has warmed up a bit yesterday and today.  But, it’s heading back down now, and I am heading north for a few days.  For sure, it will be freezing there!  So, if it’s cold where you are, ice and snow on the ground or just a cold wind blowing through the trees…make some soup.  It will warm you to the bone.

One more, for laughs…

Sweet Finn, who is an impish, mischievous soul who like nothing more than  than running and jumping and playing…and he’s not particular who he plays with…just as long as they play!  He had his surgery on Monday to have him neutered.  The Vet called me and said, all went well and while he was asleep, he took out the rest of his baby teeth  (11).  So we figured he was quit confused when he woke up…hurting at both ends.  But, it has not slowed him one bit.

His big friend, Charla, came over to spend a few days while Adam and Suze were in Savannah on a shoot.  Finn adores her….she finds him a nuisance….

When they are outside, Finn makes every step she makes…except when he is jumping at her trying to get her to run and play.  She is not interested…..

So we let her go out side by herself and keep that little imp inside.  Or Finn would possibly end up in the top of one of those tall oak trees!

We live in a private neighborhood…just one street, but we are responsible for all the repairs and maintenance that is done on our street.  So, we had a Christmas party and meeting last night.  We have had 2 new couples move in and we met them last night.  One is a young couple and one is a retired couple.  And, the house right next door to me is for sell!  Don’t some of you want to come and look at it…it even has a guest house.

Now I must go and get ready for church.  And, end this post….cause I’m already into next week.  Whew!  The weeks are ganging up on me!

PS.  Finn stole and ate one of my shoes!  One of my Toms!  I’m glad he is toothless for a while…serves him right!  🙂
