BEAUTY AND THE BEES

July 12, 2010 by tonja 5 Comments

When I ran across this story, I found it utterly fascinating. And, I thought you would, too. Did you even know this type of bee existed? Well, I had no idea. But, what a beautiful nest it makes!

Our Creator is the same one who created these tiny bees. It is He who put the knowledge into the very first of its kind. The God who creates the great and mighty wonders of this world is the same God who creates tiny masterpieces that often we fail to notice.

“Listen! Stand still and consider the wonders of God.” Job 37:14

*********************************************************

When we think of bee nests, we often think of a giant hive, buzzing with social activity, worker bees and honey. But scientists recently discovered a rare, solitary type of bee that makes tiny nests by plastering together flower petals.

Each nest is a multicolored, textured little cocoon — a papier-mache husk surrounding a single egg, protecting it while it develops into an adult bee.

“It’s not common for bees to use parts of plants for nests,” says Dr. Jerome Rozen of the American Museum of Natural History of the unexpected find. His team stumbled across the nests of the Osmia (Ozbekosima) avoseta bee in Turkey. Oddly enough, another team discovered the same bee and flowery nests in Iran on the same day. The two teams published their research together in the American Museum Novitates.

These Thumbelina-like nests are a fascinating natural work of art, but they’re also key to understanding more about how the roughly 20,000 species of bees live.

“There’s a demand for biologists to know bees nowadays,” Rosen says. “They are the foremost animal pollinators of plants, and tremendously important for maintaining ecosystems ‚Äî not only crops but also for conservation.”

To learn more, the scientists watched the busy mama bees. Building a nest takes a day or two, and the female might create about 10 nests in total, often right next to each other. To begin construction, she bites the petals off of flowers and flies each petal — one by one — back to the nest, a peanut-sized burrow in the ground.

She then shapes the multi-colored petals into a cocoon-like structure, laying one petal on top of the other and occasionally using some nectar as glue. When the outer petal casing is complete, she reinforces the inside with a paper-thin layer of mud, and then another layer of petals, so both the outside and inside are wallpapered — a potpourri of purple, pink and yellow.

These meticulous shells are just over a half-inch long and usually will house just one tiny egg. To prepare for her offspring, the mother collects pollen and nectar, which she carries back to the burrow in a nifty part of the digestive tract called the crop. She deposits this gooey blob of nutritional goodness in the bottom of the flower-petal nest. Then, she lays the egg, right on top of the gelatinous blob.

At this point, it’s time to seal in the egg. The mother bee neatly folds in the inner layer of petals, smears a paper-thin mud layer and then folds the outer petals. The casing is nearly airtight, which helps protect the vulnerable egg (and later larva, then pupa) from flooding or excessive dryness or hoofed animals.

In only three to four days, the egg hatches into a larva. When it finishes feasting on the nectar, the larva spins a cocoon (still inside the shell, which has hardened into a protective casing by this point) and then hangs out. Rosen says he isn’t sure whether it spends the winter as a larva or as an adult. But at some point the creature’s tissue begins to restructure itself, and it transforms into an adult. Come springtime, the adult bee emerges from its flowery bower.

Then, the cycle starts all over again. (Published May 6,2010, NPR)

SHARING YOUR GIFTS

May 27, 2010 by tonja 6 Comments

I have a pretty good idea of the person I am. I know many things about myself…some I’m proud of, some…not so much. One of the things I struggled with at one time was affirming other people. I don’t know why…if it was envy or just not thinking. Whatever, God impressed upon me that that was something I should be doing. I needed to look for the gifts that He had given to others and learn to appreciate the good things they did with their gifts. And, so I have made that a concious effort. And, as I have practiced this, I find that God has blessed me with seeing things through another set of eyes. And, many times, I see way more than I would on my own.

Today, a friend of mine, who is a very talented photographer, took some of my words to heart and has written a delightful post. I urge you to go over and read it. I promise you that you will be blessed…and what a feast for the eyes. Just click here and you’ll be whisked over there. It’s one of those computer things that seems almost magical…and never to be understood by some amoung us!

SATURDAY and SUNDAY and TRUE LOVE

April 18, 2010 by tonja 6 Comments

From the Grand Sandestin Hotel, there is a seashell strewn pathway down to the Baytowne Wharf shopping and eating area. It is a short walk…maybe 500 feet or so. As we walked down to find a place to eat lunch, I used my camera to capture images that demanded a second look. Here is what caught my eye…

The pathway…..

Johnny Jump-ups…planted in big beds…

…and a little orange gerbera thrown in…

And, Old Glory is peeking out between the columns…

A beautiful urn and flower bed filled with colorful pansies…

Loved the foliage on this tree against the grey-blue sky…

An absolutely gorgeous courtyard…immaculate!…

What is that I spy back behind those bushes?…

Let’s get a little closer…

What a neat old fence…

And, notice how all the vine is all twisted around, and through the gate. Don’t know what it is, but bet it’s pretty when it’s blooming…

******************************
Walking back to the hotel after breakfast, I watched an elderly couple meandering along in front of me. She had a bag full of something. She and I were talking about all the pretty flowers. She stopped walking and then she said to her hubby, “I don’t see her…she’s always here. I bet she thinks we forgot her.”
Her hubby said, “Don’t fret, dear. She always comes running when you call her. Did you call her?” “Well, no. No, I didn’t,” she said. “Well, my dear, why didn’t you?” he asked. She stopped walking and looked at him and said, “I didn’t call her because you forgot to remember that you needed to remember to tell me to call her.”
And, he turned around and walked to her, took her hand, kissed it and said, “I’m sorry I failed you, dear. I won’t let it happen again. Now, you call her and see what happens.” He glanced over at me and said, “She’s still sharp as a tack.” She looked up at him and a thousand things showed themselves on her sweet face…and then she said, “I can’t seem to remember her name. So, how can I call her?” “Think hard”, he said. “You know…just think.” She thought and it was if I could see the wheels turning…bringing up info for her to consider. She must be thinking of every name she ever knew. And, then…a smile slowly began to form. She had it!
“Ca-a-at! Cat! Cat!, she called. “Come on here to Mama. Cat, come on…I got your breakfast! Cat! Ca-a-at!” I wanted to help her call. I wanted to find a cat for her. I actually prayed that the Lord would find that cat and set it down in front of her. She called again and again. She started to get teary. Hubby looked over at her and said, “She’s gonna come…just wait!” And, I sent another prayer to the Lord. I wanted to see a cat, even though cats are not very high on my list of things I like. But, right now, I wanted to see Cat very bad. And, then…from under a big group of bushes…out comes a cat! And, from the way her sweet face lit up…I knew it was THE cat. “Look,” she said to Hubby, “I told you she was gonna come. I knew it! I knew it!” Hubby told her to come on down where there was shade before she began feeding her. There was a low wall, and she slowly sat down…and Hubby sat beside her. And, as I walked off, I looked back at them sitting there…a big smile on her face as she watched the cat. And, a bigger smile on Hubby’s face as he watched his wife. He saw me looking, and gave me a wave…and then a big thumbs up!
